Background of the Study
Urban lifestyles in Owerri Municipal have significantly reshaped dietary habits and food consumption patterns, impacting the traditional food culture that has defined the region for generations. The rapid pace of urbanization, increased work demands, and exposure to global cuisines have shifted preferences from traditional, home-cooked meals to quick, convenience-based food options (Ekwueme, 2023). Traditional dishes, which are integral to the community’s cultural identity, are increasingly replaced by processed and fast foods. This change is not only altering nutritional patterns but also leading to the erosion of culinary heritage (Okoro, 2024). Researchers suggest that while urbanization brings economic growth, it simultaneously challenges the preservation of traditional food practices. This study examines how urban lifestyle factors influence food choices, the implications for public health, and the potential loss of indigenous culinary knowledge in Owerri Municipal (Ifeoma, 2025). It further explores community responses to these changes and the opportunities for reintroducing traditional food practices in a modern urban setting (Nwachukwu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Urbanization in Owerri Municipal has led to a significant decline in the consumption of traditional foods, as busy lifestyles and modern dietary influences favor fast and processed foods (Ekwueme, 2023). This shift threatens the preservation of indigenous culinary practices and poses potential health risks due to nutritional imbalances. The study seeks to understand the factors contributing to this trend and identify strategies to encourage the retention of traditional food habits amid urban lifestyles (Okoro, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To examine the impact of urban lifestyles on traditional food consumption.
2. To identify factors leading to the decline of indigenous food practices.
3. To propose interventions for promoting traditional food culture in urban settings.
Research Questions:
1. How does urban living influence food consumption patterns in Owerri Municipal?
2. What factors contribute to the decline in traditional food practices?
3. What strategies can promote the retention of indigenous culinary traditions?
Research Hypotheses:
1. H1: Urban lifestyles significantly reduce the consumption of traditional foods.
2. H2: Modern dietary influences negatively impact indigenous culinary practices.
3. H3: Educational interventions can revive traditional food consumption.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers insights into the impact of urbanization on traditional food habits. Its findings will assist policymakers, health professionals, and cultural advocates in developing initiatives that promote indigenous culinary practices while addressing urban nutritional challenges (Ifeoma, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of urban lifestyle on traditional food consumption in Owerri Municipal, Imo State, focusing solely on local dietary practices.
Definitions of Terms:
• Urban Lifestyle: A way of living characterized by fast-paced activities and modern influences.
• Traditional Food Consumption: The regular intake of indigenous, culturally significant foods.
• Culinary Heritage: The collective traditional food practices and recipes of a community.
